How Asbestos Workers Are Affected

Asbestos is a mineral fiber that before it was banned was used in manufacturing building materials, insulation materials, in ceiling and even floor tiles.  Although asbestos workers exposed to asbestos fibers won’t at the beginning feeling the effect of exposure, in the long run the asbestos workers may experience lung disease due to the exposure. It is for this very reason, many state governments have banned the use of asbestos in any manufacture; despite the ban and the effects of asbestos, the number of asbestos workers is still on the rise.

Asbestos as mentioned before has thread like features which when exposed to the atmosphere, becomes invisible. Asbestos workers in this regard while working, inhales the thread without knowing it and sometimes carries it home in their clothes. Studies show that all the asbestos related sickness tends to affect the asbestos workers because of long term exposure to the fibers. It is said that the workers develop the asbestos related symptoms between 15-50 years after them being exposed.

One of the ways that the asbestos workers are affected negatively is through them contracting lung cancer. When the worker breathes in the fibers, they are attached to the lung cells causing limited blood ad air flow to the lungs. Some of the earlier symptoms that one may experience is coughing persistently, difficulty in breathing and sometimes pain is associated with coughing.  The hugest risk for this lung cancer is that with time, the tumors can spread to other parts of the body causing death.

Asbestos workers also have the risk of being affected with mesothelioma which is a rare type of cancer that occurs in the lining that surrounds the organs of the body. These linings are known as mesothelium. It affects the men workers more than the women, about 80 percent of the asbestos workers who are exposed to asbestos risk being infected with mesothelioma. The problem with this type of cancer is that, it takes many years for the symptoms to show. As such by the time it is diagnosed, it usually is at the advanced stage and the only way to treat it or reduce pain is through radiation and chemotherapy.

Asbestos workers also have the risk of contracting asbestosis which is a scar like feature in the lungs. It usually is as a result of being exposed to asbestos over a long period of time. The symptoms for this disease are coughing, fingers curling and also shortness of breath. If you want to treat asbestosis, there are drugs that are advised for one to take so as to decrease inflammation of the lungs and pneumonia.

Because asbestos workers have the highest risk of being infected, the health experts’ advice that the workers should limit being exposed to asbestos as that is the best way to stop the spread of the disease. According to experts also, people are exposed to asbestos if the asbestos tiles or ceilings are damaged. So, if you know that you have asbestos tiles, you should make sure that it is removed to prevent any risk.
