Asbestos workers also have the risk of being affected with mesothelioma which is a rare type of cancer that occurs in the lining that surrounds the organs of the body. These linings are known as mesothelium. It affects the men workers more than the women, about 80 percent of the asbestos workers who are exposed to asbestos risk being infected with mesothelioma. The problem with this type of cancer is that, it takes many years for the symptoms to show. As such by the time it is diagnosed, it usually is at the advanced stage and the only way to treat it or reduce pain is through radiation and chemotherapy.
Asbestos workers also have the risk of contracting asbestosis which is a scar like feature in the lungs. It usually is as a result of being exposed to asbestos over a long period of time. The symptoms for this disease are coughing, fingers curling and also shortness of breath.
